CUWEDE COD LAB celebrates remarkable achievements over the years that contribute to its key outcome areas and SDGs;

  • No poverty
  • Zero hunger
  • Quality education
  • Clean water and sanitation
  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Decent work and economic growth.
  • Climate action
  • Peace justice and strong institutions.

Over the 5-year strategic period 2023 to 2027, CUWEDE COD LAB planned to reach people with its interventions, and this target was surpassed as 18,222 (55%) people were reached. Of these, 6,200 were Males, and 12,022 Female.

Organisational Priorities

These achievements over the years reinforce that CUWEDE COD LAB is uniquely designed to help solve complex development problems for young people in a courageous, integrated, and creative/innovative way.

The ambition of the Sustainable Development Goals requires an accelerated pace of change. We are pushing boundaries in the way we manage our systems and resources, and adapting our business model for a more effective, efficient and innovative CUWEDE COD LAB.  By improving internally, we also improve our development results.

GIZ CUSP II is helping build on our existing assets – strong local presence, thought leadership, and over 18 years of experience – to respond to a fast-changing development landscape. We are creating new solutions for young people, building collaboration platforms, and sparking new partnerships and financing instruments. These innovations are disrupting the way CUWEDE COD LAB thinks, invests, manages, and delivers – so we can perform faster and better than ever – from getting systems working to strengthening members, from reaching new audiences to increasing our funding base and deepening programme quality and coherence.

In the coming years, this built skill set for board, staff and systems will accelerate local action to drive change while embarking on a major shift in the way we work – a robust, integrated way to put our best work into achieving the SDGs.

Outcome 1:
SKILLING YOUNG PEOPLE TO KEEP OUT OF POVERTY; AVOIDING EXTREME VULNERABILITIES.

It’s no coincidence that our first key priority relates directly to the first Sustainable Development Goal: to eradicate all forms of poverty, wherever it exists. For CUWEDE COD LADB, helping young people to get out and stay out of poverty is our primary focus. It features in our work with governments, communities and partners across in all the areas in which we operate. Over the last 3 years, 316 young people (211 girls and 105 boys)got better trade and entrepreneurship skills in tailoring & fashion design, carpentry & joinery, welding, leather works, apiculture, building and concrete practice, driving and motorcycle mechanics to tackle poverty using

Outcome 3:
IMPROVING GOOD GOVERNANCE, SERVICE DELIVERY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY USING CITIZEN-LED ADVOCACY-DONE BETTER.

People’s lives are better when they have peace, freedom and opportunity, when government is efficient and responsive, when rights and the law are respected and upheld, and when the forces of globalization pull people up rather than hold them back.

In 2023 alone, CUWEDE COD LAB, with support from ActionAid International Uganda (AAIU) supported three districts of Nebbi, Zombo and Pakwach to monitor public services in health and influence public funding for improved service delivery.

  • 66 health facilities were reached. This initiative helped to improve and deliver last mile health services in 87 communities through our partnership with the three District Integrity Promotion Forum (DIPF) in the three Local Governments of Nebbi, Zombo and Pakwach.
  • 9000 citizens in 15 Lower Local Governments were supported to influence public funding and improved service delivery in essential services of health, education, water, agriculture and rural roads.
Outcome 2:
EMPOWEING WOMEN AND GIRLS.
ENGAGING MEN AND BOYS

Gender equality and women’s empowerment drive change for the good of everyone. Today, women, girls, and gender minorities are subverting inequalities and stereotypes. And we’re here to help. At CUWEDE COD LAB, we integrate gender equality into every aspect of our work, collaborating with our partners’ countries to promote child rights, sexual and reproductive health, child protection, end gender-based violence, tackle climate change with women and girls, and advance female leadership in business and politics.

In 2023-2024, we positively impacted the lives of hundreds of girls as well as boys. We helped communities change negative social norms, the rules on savings and access to finance and investment for girls. We worked with the girls, boys and local leaders to break down barriers that prevent girls from remaining in school because no one should be left behind.

  • Built grassroots alliance of girls and boys aged 16-24 in nine parishes. Mobilized over 600 young people to conduct campaigns to end child marriages and teenage pregnancies
  • 105 girls gained access to savings, investments and financial services through VLSA.
  • Nine Parish Youth Association each comprising 30 young boys and girls supported to develop and implement simple advocacy strategies to prevent violent extremism
Outcome 4:
CRISIS RESPONSE, RECOVERY, AND PROTECTRION-DONE BETTER.

For the millions of people across the world living in or recovering from crisis, there is no quick or easy way out. Conflict, war, epidemics and disasters drive poverty, inequality, weak governance, and the destruction of the environment. It is time to break this cycle – especial in WASH, health, roads, disaster preparedness and climate action.

In the last 4 years? CUWEDE COD LAB leveraged $ 77,222 from local and international donors to strengthen resilience to shocks and crisis with the support from partners and advocated for integrated, risk-informed approach to development, including planning for and recovering from disasters hence supported communities and young people with safe and clean water, tree seedling in the face of climate change.

A new way of working with humanitarian partners is taking root in CUWEDE COD LAB, bridging life-saving response with youth skilling, recovery and development needs, because helping young refugee communities to return to lives of dignity as quickly as possible is our long-term goal.

5,300 displaced rural households across 4 districts of Nebbi, Zombo, Pakwach and Madi-Okollo improved their transition towards clean, renewable, affordable sources of energy.  A set of 3000 solar-powered systems and clean cook stoves and 5,600 tree seedlings were distributed.
